The VE Holden Commodore, an iconic symbol of Australian automotive history, is well-known for its robust performance and power. One of the standout features in some models of the Commodore, particularly the VE variant, is the 6.0 litre L98 Gen IV 270kW V8 engine. This engine set the bar high for power, performance, and fuel efficiency.

Unveiling the Powerhouse: The L98 Engine

The L98 engine, produced by General Motors at its plant in Silao, Mexico, was a unique addition to the Holden vehicles. It is a 6.0-litre pushrod V8 petrol engine that was used in GM’s Australian Holden vehicles between 2006 and 2010.

This Gen IV V8 engine has a bore x stroke of 101.6mm x 92.0mm and uses a multiport fuel injection system. It delivers a peak power of 270kW at 5700rpm. Notably, the L98 engine was a standard addition to the first versions of the VE Commodore released in 2006.

Fuel Efficiency and Performance

The L98 engine initially omitted Active Fuel Management (AFM), a feature that contributes to enhanced fuel consumption during light engine loads. However, it still delivered commendable fuel efficiency without compromising on performance.

The VE Commodore equipped with the L98 engine is a powerhouse of performance. It offers an outstanding drive experience, thanks to the engine’s robust output. It is worth noting that these engines are what you will find in most VE Holden Commodores.

L98 Engine

The 6.0L L98 Gen IV 270kW V8 Engine is a high-performance powerhouse that utilizes a 90-degree overhead valve V8 configuration. This engine features cross-flow cylinder heads and dual knock-control sensors for optimal performance. It also comes equipped with onboard diagnostics for easy troubleshooting.

The engine’s central plenum is designed with individual symmetrical runners, which aids in efficient airflow. The ignition system is a state-of-the-art, distributorless direct-fire setup, featuring a solid-state coil near the plug with an integrated igniter. This arrangement is performance-oriented and calibrated to deliver optimal power output.

The engine is paired with a 2.25-inch dual stainless steel exhaust system with quad outlets. This enhances the engine’s performance by ensuring efficient exhaust gas flow. The engine also boasts a new single-piece engine cover, which not only looks sleek but also offers acoustic insulation for a quieter ride.

The L98, a 6.0-litre version of the LS2, was unveiled in 2006. This engine variant was incorporated into VE Series I Holdens and VZ SS Thunder models equipped with manual transmissions. While the engines designed for the American market were equipped with Displacement On Demand (DOD) technology, this feature was deactivated for engines destined for Australia. Instead, Australian models with 6L80 automatic transmissions were fitted with Active Fuel Management (AFM).

The removal of DOD and AFM from the L76 led to modifications in the L98’s upper components, including the camshaft, lifters and other minor fittings. The square-port cylinder heads of the L98 offer superior airflow compared to the older cathedral-port heads.

However, due to this design modification, intake manifolds and most upper-end parts are not interchangeable between earlier LS engines and the L98. The introduction of L98 engines was the end of cable throttles for Aussie V8s.
