VE Commodore Buying Guide

2012 Holden Commodore 4D SEDAN SS-V VE II MY12

Holden VE Commodore Buying Guide: What to Look For

The Holden VE Commodore, produced between 2006 and 2013, is an iconic Australian vehicle that combines power, performance, and style. Whether you’re considering the SV6, SS, or Calais model, there are several key factors to consider when purchasing a used Holden VE Commodore.

Engine & Transmission

The heart of any vehicle is its engine, and the VE Commodore is no exception. The SV6 model comes with a robust 3.6L V6, while the SS and Calais models boast a powerful 6.0L V8. Ensure there are no leaks and that all parts, including rubbers and tie rods, are in good condition.

A well-maintained service history is a good indicator of the engine’s health. If possible, have a trusted mechanic inspect the vehicle before purchase.

Holden VE Commodores do have some common issues, and these can vary between the V6 and V8 engines. Nonetheless, many of the problems are consistent across both Series 1 and Series 2.

As these the V8 engines age, they can all potentially have issues. Lifter problems are the most common.

Transmission

As the model has evolved, the gearboxes appear to have improved, with the Series II demonstrating superior performance compared to the earlier VE models. However, these gearboxes can malfunction if they are not filled with sufficient fluid or if the wrong type of fluid is used during regular maintenance.

Suspension & Tyres

The suspension and tyres play a crucial role in the Commodore’s performance and comfort. Check for signs of excessive wear and tear. Keep in mind that models with 18-inch alloys and 45-profile Bridgestones may not perform well on unsealed surfaces.

Features & Equipment

The VE Commodore is known for its comprehensive feature set. Depending on the model, you can expect to find leather-appointed seats, advanced infotainment systems, dual-zone climate control, and more. Ensure all these features function correctly.

Value for Money

Considering the performance and features offered, the VE Commodore provides excellent value for money. A 6.0-litre Calais V Sportwagon, for instance, loaded with gear, big wheels, and plentiful bling can be a great deal in the current market.

Timing Chains

One common issue with the VE Commodore is the timing chains. However, this is generally a non-issue with the V8 models. It’s always a good idea to check this with a mechanic before purchase.

Timing Chains – These can stretch over time and necessitate replacement, a job that can cost around $2,000 for labor and materials. This issue was more prevalent in the Series 1 Alloytec models (LE0, LY7 and LW2 variants).

Symptoms of a Stretched Timing Chain in VE Commodore

  • Noticeable rattling sounds from the engine during startup, especially when it’s cold, irregular idling, or an illuminated check engine light on the dashboard
  • Engine or cylinder misfire errors
  • Presence of metal particles in the engine oil or contamination of the engine oil
  • Difficulty or inability to start the car

Conclusion

The Holden VE Commodore is a remarkable vehicle that offers a blend of power, comfort, and style. When buying a used model, it’s essential to consider the engine and transmission, suspension and tyres, features and equipment, value for money, and potential issues such as timing chains. With careful consideration and inspection, you’re sure to find a VE Commodore that offers fantastic value and performance.
