The Holden VE Commodore Omega: A Blend of Comfort and Performance

The Omega was the base model VE Commodore, and this replaced the outgoing Commodore Executive and Acclaim models (introduced in 1983 and 1993, respectively).

The Holden VE Commodore Omega was produced by Holden between 2006 and 2013, the Omega model was designed to provide a comfortable driving experience without compromising on performance.

Performance and Specifications

Under the hood, the Omega comes with a robust 3.0-litre V6 engine. This powertrain delivers a smooth and responsive driving experience, making it suitable for both city driving and highway cruising. The 6-speed automatic transmission further enhances the vehicle’s performance, offering seamless gear shifts and optimal fuel efficiency.

The Commodore Omega also has the capability to run on any blend of unleaded fuel running from standard (91RON) and premium (95RON and above), providing flexibility and convenience for the driver.

Design and Features

The VE Commodore Omega was equipped with a range of standard features, such as an audio system with six speakers, MP3 compatibility, and CD player, paired with auxiliary inputs. It also featured a driver’s seat that could be adjusted in four different ways using power controls, cruise control, multifunctional steering wheel controls, automatic headlights, remote central locking, power windows and mirrors, a steering wheel that could be adjusted for height and reach, a 12-volt power outlet, a trip computer, and an immobilizer.

In March 2008 (‘MY09’), the standard features received a boost with the introduction of air conditioning, 16-inch alloy wheels, body-colored wing mirrors and door handles, and a chrome insert for the grille. The November 2008 update (‘MY09.5’) made white instrument cluster illumination a standard feature across all models.

The Omega model shares the same sleek and stylish design that the VE range is known for. However, it stands out with its unique Comfort suspension setting, which is different from the Sport Handling setting found in other models like the SV6 and SS. This suspension setup ensures a smoother ride, providing enhanced comfort even on longer journeys.

Inside, the Omega offers a well-insulated cabin that effectively minimizes road noise. It is equipped with a range of features such as an advanced infotainment system, comfortable seats, and ample storage space, ensuring a pleasant driving experience.

The VE Omega model lacks some fundamental features, including air conditioning. Surprisingly, the Holden Commodore VE does not come standard with air conditioning. This is a significant oversight on Holden’s part. Additionally, the Omega doesn’t include a spare tyre.

However, the Omega, come equipped with a “space saver” spare tyre, which has been subject to criticism. This tyre could be used for approximately 500 kilometres (310 mi) at a top speed of 80 km/h (50 mph).

Holden asserted that the new VE model offers better value for money as it includes an Electronic Stability Program. Many other auto manufacturers, such as Hyundai, have been quick to point out that this feature has been standard in their vehicles for a while now. Currently, Holden hasn’t provided specific details about the Commodore’s fuel consumption. However, considering it utilised the same Alloytec V6 engine as the previous model, it had similar fuel efficiency figures of around 11L/100km for combined city and highway driving.

Holden highlighted the following exterior features for the VE Omega

  • Twin reflector headlamps with gloss black bezels.
  • A signature aero grille blade finished in charcoal.
  • Full body colour bumper fascia with three-port lower openings.
  • 16-inch styled wheel covers.
  • Sporty low gloss black finish for mirror and door opening surrounds.
  • Grab-style door handles in matching low gloss black.
  • Side fender vent with integrated side repeater lamp.
  • Body colour lower rocker skirt.
  • High tech tail lamps with clear red outer lens over a bright styled bezel.
  • Laser welded two-piece, all-metal decklid.
  • Two-piece rear fascia with black lower accent insert, incorporating reflectors.
  • Single round exhaust outlet.

Interior highlights included

  • A ‘down and away’ instrument panel, flush centre stack and horizontal decorative appliqué and door armrests, creating a feeling of spaciousness.
  • The serpentine plan view of the instrument panel enhances the sense of space and positions centre stack controls within comfortable reach.
  • Storage includes large glovebox, armrest underside with clips for pens and cards. The console features a trinket tray and dual cup holders. Front and rear door trims have bins for drink bottles.
  • Omega instrument cluster includes a central vertical-format dot matrix screen, complemented by a high-mounted five-inch monochrome display.

Market Reception and Legacy

The Holden Commodore Omega has been widely praised for its blend of comfort, style, and performance. Owners have often highlighted its easy handling, lack of harshness or vibration, and overall driving comfort.

Even after ceasing production, the Omega continues to be a popular choice on the used car market, with many buyers attracted to its appealing combination of features, performance, and value.

Holden introduced five special edition models based on the Commodore Omega:

  1. V-Series: Launched in October 2006, the V-Series Commodore featured air conditioning, a sporty body kit, 17-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, and colour-matched wing mirrors and exterior door handles.
  2. Lumina: Unveiled in June 2007, the Lumina model presented a luxury theme with the Berlina grille and original Calais V seven-spoke alloy wheels. Apart from the rear spoiler, it was identical to the V-Series but added rear parking sensors and Bluetooth connectivity.
  3. 60th Anniversary: Released on 1 May 2008 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Holden’s first vehicle, the 48–215. This model was essentially the same as the Lumina in terms of equipment and styling, with unique additions like 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seat inserts, and “60th Anniversary” badging.
  4. International: Both sedan and Sportwagon versions debuted in mid-March 2009. Internationals featured launch VE Calais V alloy wheels, front fog lamps, a six-disc CD changer, leather upholstery, and trim and steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity, and rear park assist. Holden reintroduced this edition in October 2009, with a 3.0-litre SIDI V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission, and an optional 3.6-litre LPG Alloytec V6 engine with a four-speed automatic transmission for the sedan only. Additional features included 18-inch alloy wheels, a Berlina front grille, leather seat trim and steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity, and rear park assist (already standard on Sportwagons).
  5. Z Series: Launched on 5 September 2012, this special edition was designed to combine luxury and sports, offering better value. The Z Series aimed to boost the VE range sales and bid farewell to the last VE models before the VF release. Models featuring the Z badging included the Omega, SV6, SS, and SS V. Key features comprised leather seat trim (Omega and SS V), Bluetooth connectivity, rear parking sensors, a rear parking camera, 18″ WM Caprice alloys (Omega), a rear lip spoiler, and 19″ alloys (SV6 and SS). The Sedan and Sportwagon were available as Z Series, SV6 Z Series, SS Z Series, and SS V Z Series. The Ute included all features except for the Omega-based Z Series model.
